Mitchell Wall Is Grateful to Bring Home Three SOPHI Awards

Sophisticated Living St. Louis held its inaugural SOPHI Awards, celebrating the best and brightest in design, architecture, and builders in St. Louis, Missouri. It proved to be just what the city was looking for. Almost 300 entries were submitted, 10 nationally acclaimed architects and designers signed on as judges, and their awards ceremony hosted a full crowd.

Mitchell Wall Architecture & Design is grateful to be the recipient of three awards: Residential Interior Design – Over 3,500 Square Feet, Residential Interior Design – Under 3,500 Square Feet, and House of the Year Modern.

Along with other winners and finalists, we were honored to attend the 2024 SOPHI Awards Gala on November 6, 2024, at 21c Museum, North America’s only multi-venue museum dedicated to collecting and exhibiting art of the 21st century.

New Century Modern

New Century Modern won the SOPHI Award for Residential Interior Design – Under 3,500 Square Feet!

A client sought our architectural expertise in designing a custom home based on the mid-century modern aesthetic. Central to the design was a distinct request: two separate owner’s suites positioned at opposite ends of the house and as far apart as possible. It only made sense to develop a plan where each person had their own wing and for there to be a common space at the convergence of the two.

This floor plan has three intersecting planes of stone. One defines the first suite’s wing, another runs along the same direction but extends to the second suite, and the third is perpendicular to the plane crossing the common space.

As you approach the house, one of the first things you can see before even walking inside is a set of cantilevered stairs in the common space, which leads to the guest suites on the second floor. A perforated stone wall at the top gives access to different rooms.

The result is a stunning contemporary home in Ladue, a suburb of St. Louis, immaculately decorated and designed with a new century of modernism in mind.

Tulsa Custom Home

Tulsa Custom Home won two SOPHI Awards: Residential Interior Design – Under 3,500 Square Feet and House of the Year Modern!

In 2014, the George Kaiser Family Foundation donated $350 million as a gift to A Gathering Place park. It is believed to be the largest gift to a public park system in the history of the United States. This made a huge and wonderful difference to Tulsa, Oklahoma. The once blighted area families were moving away from transformed into a sought-after city.

A client approached us to design a three-story house on a diminutive lot. This required a lot of architectural programming. In the end, they have a two-car garage, an impressive entryway, an open-air third-story patio, an open-concept floorplan, a two-sided fireplace, three bedrooms on the second floor, and the entire third floor devoted to a primary suite with an elegant bathroom and separate walk-in closets. Plus, expansive windows and the use of natural elements bring the outdoors in for this young family.
