When our client approached us to help him with his home, he didn’t actually have a home for us to work on. Instead, Mitchell Wall visited several homes with him to discuss the options for renovation and adaptation in all of them.
When we first came across this property, the client couldn’t see the opportunity that it presented, but we did. We looked at this house and knew it could be something special…but it was going to take a lot of work.
Knowing we were in an area that cherishes the historic homes, we knew we were limited in exterior improvements. But we had a vision. And the client had an imagination. And together we turned a 1950’s colonial home into the ideal home for him and his family.
When we arrived, the house had three bedrooms and two baths on the second floor with a half bath on the ground floor. The basement was largely unfinished with two cinderblock tuck-under garages and a utility room.
We got to work.
We opened up the ground floor vestibule to create a more profound entry, and turned the breakfast room into a bar with direct access to their new elevated outdoor living. We merged the dining room and kitchen to create an open living experience and updated the living room to be more at one with contemporary living. We reallocated spaces on the second floor to turn the entire level into a primary suite with a full bathroom, an enormous walk-in closet, and an office.
We took out pretty much everything that was in the basement and converted the lower level into a two-bedroom suite for the college-aged daughters.
