Taking a Gambrel St. Louis, MO
Taking a Gambrel

The challenge was to create the charm of older homes in a new house for the 21st century. The young owners wanted a New England style home, with shingles and a gambrel roof. The light airy feeling of the home does not have divisions between formal and informal living spaces.

The residence includes 8,000 s.f. on the main level and 3,400 s.f. on the finished lower level. As you enter the home, you have a sightline straight through to the backyard. Verandas, porches, patios, and outdoor living allow easy flow.

The kitchen is open and easy. Sun pours into the kitchen and the breakfast nook and banquette serve the family and friends well. The hearth room is defined by its columns. Both open onto to central area with its wide halls.

One highlight of this transitional residence is the gracious double staircase, with attendant millwork. The split staircase works as a front and back stairs. The stairs are ebony-stained white oak. Paneling looks like it’s been there for 50 years.

The master suite includes a private sitting room and fireplace, a balcony, the bedroom and fireplace, the bathroom and two closets. The residence also includes two offices: one in the family center; the other private off of the study. The garage is connected to the house via the the functional and detailed family center . There is a separate Dutch door for the children.
