The English Manor

Updating any home built in the early 20th century has its challenges. People do not live the same way as they used to. Over the last hundred years, emphasis in the home has moved from formal social places to more casual spaces: for example, kitchens are now built for entertainment and not simply utility. Bedrooms and bathrooms have changed as well. With careful and respectful space planning, we were able to reinvent this home to accommodate the busy lifestyle of this young family. With updates to every single room in the house, we were able to create a contemporary machine for living that still pays homage to it’s historical roots.

The biggest change in the home was moving the owner suite from one end of the house to the other. By taking the former laundry room, office, and one of the children’s bedrooms we were able to reinvent the rooms as a spacious owner’s suite complete with an enormous walk-in closet and a formidable spa as an owner’s bath.

The client’s goal for this project was to brighten and neutralize a once dark home. We helped by opening up and simplifying the cut up smaller spaces to allow for everyday family life and light. Our approach was to provide a better flow for a busy modern family that likes to entertain and gather. The result was a customized space that the client had been dreaming of.
