THE CLARKSON VALLEY HOUSE

Our clients came to us wanting a “not so big” house, easy living on one floor, scaled back from their large family house that was hard to maintain, inefficient in energy use, with dark, chopped up rooms that lacked a flow. The clients wanted a smaller home, constructed with high energy efficiency and low maintenance, a “jewel box.” They also wanted a home that flowed, a home that was planned in a thoughtful way for their family.

With their lifestyle in mind, we designed a home that benefits from natural light all year long in St. Louis’ climate, a climate that does not readily avail itself to natural light year round. This is a great small house, one that accommodates all the family’s needs. Intimate spaces and nooks were created around the family’s favorite generational pieces. The rooms flow for extended family: the kitchen flows into the family gathering room, which flows into the four seasons room. The mudroom and laundry center connect the kitchen with the garage. So children can play and adults can observe.

From the foyer one sees into the dining room, the living room and the four seasons room. From the four seasons room, one peers into the hearth room which flows into the kitchen. The four seasons room also links the house to the garden. The gallery connects the public living areas with the owner’s hobby room, the owner’s study, and the master suite. Two bedrooms and bathrooms are located on the upper level.

Since one of the primary goals for this “not so big house” is to be energy efficient and maintenance free, great consideration was given to building materials and construction. The exterior material is stucco, which is maintenance free. The floors are select Missouri Oak from Union, MO.
